To become a more effective manager and leader

‘Manager Tools’ is focused on helping you to become a more effective manager and leader. Mark Horstman and Mike Auzenne are the founders of ‘Manager Tools’, a consulting and training company.

The core training method consists of more than 100 podcasts; each of them of about half an hour duration.

The core building blocks of Manager-Tools

  • The Management Trinity – four key management skills to manager your directs
  • The ‘DiSC’ model for effective communication – how to adjust your communication with other people, based on their communication style.

This is the best starting point for these hands-on podcast trainings.

My experience

In January I have participated in a great three days management training by Mark and Mike in London on:

  • ‘The Effective Manager’
  • ‘Effective Communication’

I have put this to practice by facilitating a very productive workshop with middle managers of my company, using some of the core ideas of Manager-Tools.

  • One on Ones: to Encourage Professional Relationships
  • Feedback: to Encourage Effectice Behavior
  • Coaching: to Encourage Improved Effectiveness
  • Delegation: to grow the Organization

Core ideas of these four key management skills:

One on Ones: ‘Effective Managers know that to achieve exceptional results, we must create relationships with each of their directs. To do THAT, we must spend time every week focusing on the direct and their work.’

Feedback: ‘As a manager, you’re responsible for the results that your team produces. Results are nothing more than the aggregated behaviors of everyone who works for you. So, effective managers know that we’ve got to have a way to talk to our directs about their behaviors. The Feedback Model gives us the way to do it.’. This is a great 15 minutes video of Mark Horstman explaining how you can apply the feedback model.

Coaching: ‘As a manager, you’re responsible not only for results, but also for improving results over time. That means you’re responsible for improving the skills – the behaviors – of your team. Feedback gets you started, and Coaching helps everyone on your team improve.’

Delegation: ‘Effective Managers delegate routinely, because they not only know how, but also because they understand that delegation is a key engine of corporate profitable growth.’

DISC: Dominance – Influence – Steadiness – Conscientious

Everybody has one of these communication styles as his/her dominant style. To achieve success:

  • Dominance: taking decisive actions towards goal
  • Influence : persuading others to work with them towards the goal
  • Steadiness: works with others as part of a team
  • Conscientious: works within rules and procedures

You will reduce conflict and will be communicating more effectively when you adjust somewhat to the style of your counterpart.
